At Neighborhood Compost, we are committed to promoting sustainability through composting, recycling difficult materials, and regenerative farming techniques. Our mission is centered around the idea of circularity - where we reduce waste and repurpose materials to give them new life. Recently, during a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we discovered a company that aligns perfectly with our values: bungkus.
bungkus is a unique brand based in Malaysia, co-founded by Ken Jin and Rio, a husband and wife duo with a passion for sustainability. Their name is derived from the Malay word for “take-away” or “wrap up” – an ode to Malaysia’s rich culture of enjoying meals that are often packed in plastic bags for convenience. A dish like nasi lemak – Malaysia’s national dish of coconut rice, eggs, anchovies, peanuts, cucumbers, and sambal – is traditionally served wrapped in a banana leaf, but often ends up in a plastic bag for takeaway. Unfortunately, this convenience comes with the environmental burden of plastic waste.
In Malaysia, as in many places around the world, recycling soft plastics is a challenge. These plastics often end up in already overcrowded landfills or are exported to other countries. This is where bungkus comes in – turning discarded soft plastics into beautiful, functional products that help reduce waste. Ken Jin and Rio source soft plastic waste, clean it, and then press it into sheets, which are transformed into unique, one-of-a-kind bags. No two bags are alike, thanks to the varied patterns and textures created from the repurposed plastic.
The couple’s mission goes beyond just making bags. Rio, a designer, believes that the true value of a product lies in both its function and its environmental impact. Every bag is crafted by hand with love and care, using the repurposed plastic to create sturdy, durable products with clever, thoughtful designs. These bags are not only practical, but they also serve as a reminder of the potential we all have to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable planet.

NC's founder, Adison Evans says:
"On my recent visit to Kuala Lumpur in November 2024, I was struck by how much more urgent and prominent the conversation around eco-friendly products and practices had become. As a professional touring saxophonist and bandleader, my last trip to Malaysia in 2019 didn’t have the same eco-conscious energy. But this time, I felt a palpable shift toward sustainability. I was thrilled to discover bungkus and, after some research, reached out to Ken Jin and Rio to learn more about their incredible work."
Now, thanks to a bit of extra suitcase space, we’re excited to share these beautiful bags with the Neighborhood Compost community here in New Jersey! Whether you’re in Malaysia or right here in the U.S., we can all take actionable steps toward reducing waste. bungkus is a perfect example of how small businesses around the world are working hard to repurpose waste and reduce the environmental impact of everyday products.
