At Neighborhood Compost, we believe that Earth Day shouldn’t be reserved to just one day of the year. Today we’re celebrating Earth Month by focusing on fun, engaging, and educational activities for kids that highlight the importance of sustainability and the environment. There’s no better way to spark a love for the planet than with hands-on activities that children can get excited about!
Here are a few creative activities you can do with the kids this Earth Month that are not only fun but also help foster an appreciation for environmental stewardship and composting!

DIY Seed Bombs
Seed bombs are a creative and easy way to plant wildflowers in your backyard or even in local community spaces! To make them, mix compost, clay powder, and wildflower seeds into a dough-like mixture. Then roll the mixture into small balls and let them dry.
Once dry, you can throw the seed bombs into open areas—helping foster learning about pollinators like bees while also encouraging the growth of beautiful flowers!
Recycled Art Projects
Gather up old cardboard, newspapers, bottle caps, and other recyclables and turn them into fun art projects!
Kids can create sculptures, collages, or even a mini-museum of recycled treasures. This activity not only encourages creativity but also teaches them about the importance of reusing materials and keeping waste out of landfills. Consider hosting a “recycled art show” in your living room or backyard to showcase their work!
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Take your Earth Month celebrations outside with a nature scavenger hunt!
Create a list of natural items for young ones to find—consider a leaf from a specific tree, a smooth rock, or a flower of a certain color. This is a great way to get them outdoors and connected to the beauty of the environment. Turn this into an additionally educational activity by discussing the different ecosystems you discover and how we can all work to protect them.

Create a Worm Farm
Worms can be essential to the composting process, and a worm farm is a great way to teach kids about the benefits of these little critters. With a simple container, some soil, and food scraps, kids can learn how worms turn organic matter into nutrient-rich compost. It’s a fascinating hands-on experience that teaches them about biodiversity and the importance of worms in the ecosystem.
Consider taking this learning to the classroom by bringing Neighborhood Compost’s educational programs to your school! When children learn to care for the environment, they carry those values into adulthood, making choices that support a healthier planet. Schools that partner with us for composting education aren’t just teaching science—they’re nurturing the future leaders of a more sustainable world.

Plant a Sapling
If you have the space, plant a tree, shrub, or other flora together. Trees are essential for a healthy environment, providing oxygen, reducing carbon dioxide, and supporting wildlife. Kids will love watching their tree grow, taking pride in knowing they helped contribute to the planet’s health.

Build a Bug Hotel
Encourage kids to build a bug hotel in your garden to provide shelter for beneficial insects like bees, ladybugs, and butterflies. Use natural materials like sticks, pine cones, and straw to create a little refuge for bugs that will help your garden thrive.
Utilize this activity to assist children in understanding the importance of our planet, even the small things!
Upcycle Clothing into Reusable Bags
Old shirts and pants can be transformed into reusable shopping bags, teaching kids the importance of reducing waste!
With a few simple stitches or fabric glue, you can upcycle old clothing and create durable, eco-friendly bags. Future ecowarriors will love the creativity, and you can use the bags for future shopping trips, reducing your carbon footprint. Find a guide here!

Earth Day Every Day
Whether it's through composting, recycling, or spending time in nature, there are so many ways to celebrate our planet.
Remember, Earth Day isn't just a one-time event—it’s a mindset we can carry with us every day. By starting with these activities, we can inspire the next generation to be eco-conscious stewards of the Earth. So, put on you shoes, get creative, and celebrate Earth Month with in ways that will leave a lasting impact on both you and the planet!
Best of luck, Neighbor!
